Stack overflow causing packaged build to crash on startup (Windows). FClusterReferenceProcessor::AddObjectToCluster() -> FClusterReferenceProcessor::MergeCluster()

So on 4.20 I’m able to package my build just fine. However, on 4.21, a packaged version of my game crashes immediately on startup with a stack overflow. Here’s the full log I get when running the game:

I’m not really sure what’s going on. It looks like this is happening when loading materials, but I’m not 100% sure (I’m going based off of the warning that displays before the crash). I can’t figure out how to reproduce it (otherwise I’d file an official bug report with Epic). Any ideas?

The only results on Google are packaged Android builds, but this is on Windows 64 bit. If it helps any, I’ve found people with similar issues here and here. I’ve tried all the steps listed in those answers (disabling Blueprint nativization, etc.).

I really don’t want to have to go through the trouble of compiling the engine myself to add logging and see exactly what these functions are trying to do, but if I don’t have any options I can try it. In the meantime, any help would be appreciated.

Update: I’ve narrowed it down to definitely being materials/particles of some kind causing the issue. If I delete every single material in my project and get rid of a couple places where I use particle emitters, everything works. I’m now in the process of slowly deleting each folder of materials individually to see where the issue is.

Another update: I’ve narrowed it down to 2 sources:

  1. One of my particle materials. I’m not sure which yet, but I might have an idea.
  2. A “cel shading” material function in one of my materials. This material function relies upon another material function. It’s not that complex, as far as materials go, but it’s seemingly complex enough that packaged builds can’t handle it. My guess is that these 2 separate material functions are being packaged in 2 different clusters, but somehow the clusters are causing a circular dependency somehow.

One of my particle materials uses the cel shading functions as well; I get the feeling that’s the material that’s causing the issues (although I haven’t tested that theory yet). If I can confirm and replicate this, I’ll be submitting a bug to Epic.

Stack overflow occurred. I doubted “Share Material Shader Code” so I tried to pack without it. but Stack overflow still occurred. when I was debugging I saw that “AddObjectToCluster” function was processing an engine material (“/Engine/EngineMaterials/Good64x64TilingNoiseHighFreq”)
I don’t know what it is.
