Decals dont' look how I expected

I’ve been struggling with decals. There doesn’t seem to be any documentation so I’ve been using what I’ve seen in demo maps (Specifically, Reflections map with graffiti decals. It took me a while to figure out why i couldn’t get my decals to look like ones in reflections scene and it seems to be related to shadowing. As you can see below, where sunlight is hitting decal, it’s behaving as expected, making it look as if grass was painted red, while in shadow, I can see what looks like a red-multiplied grass texture.

You can see a bigger issue in demo map here:

I’ve tried about every combo of settings in material editor, bit it’s just not fixing this issue.

Did you tried to assign flat normal map to your decal ? I think I had similiar issue and it was related to not haveing normal map in material.

Thanks for tip. I tried it, but problem still exists. Maybe my writeup wasn’t terribly clear. I like “painted grass” look, it’s what I was expecting, it just blends incorrectly in shadowed areas. Adding a normal overrides existing source normal, making decal look ‘flat’ however, blending issue persists.

Hi ,

Thank you for your report. I looked into this issue and it appears that it is known. correct specialist has been assigned to it and may begin working on a fix. If there is anything else that is not behaving as expected, please let us know.

Thank you,

Alexander

I’m getting this same issue. Like in Mobile demo map, if I put down a decal it doesn’t show where there are shadows. It’s like it doesn’t receive indirect lighting. I hope it’s fixed soon.

Hey @sadtaco,

Sorry for delay in response. This is an old Archive thread from our beta users, put here for reference. If you’re still having issues with decals, please feel free to open a new question so we can address issue there with updated information. Thanks!
