How to create VR gun grab/interaction like in Pavlov VR?

Hi Guys,

I am currently creating an application to help avoid negligent discharges, as well as showing how to disassemble and reassemble the SA 80 rifle for my university project. I have currently finished the SA 80 model (Shown below) but, I am confused about where to go from here.

I’ve looked into methods of making a skeletal mesh with the model I have (Which is also built as multiple pieces too) and using sockets but, I have no idea how to create a skeletal mesh and how to use sockets to get an effect like the gun handling in Pavlov VR ( Like this —> Pavlov VR How To Reload Every Gun In The Game (Plus some tips) - YouTube ) and Zero Caliber for example?

Would anyone be able to suggest a method on how to get the same effect as Pavlov’s weapon grip/handling system? Or be able to explain to me how to use the method I have mentioned above?

Also, if anyone else would be able to assist; I would also like to know how to go about making the cocking handle work to eject the rounds etc. ( Like this —> Pavlov VR How To Reload Every Gun In The Game (Plus some tips) - YouTube )

Just to add I am using 3dsmax for this model.

Kind Regards,

Mitchel

You may want to have a look at my tutorial here: Two hands weapon handling in VR tutorial - Unreal Engine 4 - YouTube
It will get you started with the weapon grabbing and handling.

Regarding the animation of the gun, you don’t necessarily need to use a rigged skeletal mesh. You can animate the single parts with timelines. Have a look here: Timelines | Unreal Engine Documentation

@vr_marco, Ahh that looks exactly like what I need for the grabbing! I will give it a shot with my model, though would it still work if the model is in pieces? Or would you recommend that I parent the model pieces together or anything like that?

Also, I will look into the timeline stuff, thank you for that suggestion!

Can you please point me to a tutorial and program to do what you did with the separate parts correctly?
I think, I think I understand the timeline part.

Hi there, I aplogise on getting back to you so so soooooo late, I have not been on this forum for a good bit of time but just in case you’re still looking for some kind of answer; I modelled this in 3dsMax and I didn’t really follow a tutorial to create it, I just used side-on references to model it.
