Connecting to the HoloLens in 4.22 Preview?

I saw in the update notes that Unreal now supports connecting to the HoloLens via the Holographic Remoting App. I was just curious how to go about connecting to it and what all I would have to do to run an application on it. Any help or resources regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Also when setting up a project should I use the VR template or the HandheldAR template?.

I would like to know it as well.

Once you activate the Windows Mixed Reality Plugin it appears under the Plugin in the Project Settings but, I’ve had no luck actually connecting it to the editor.

Hello,

These are the setup steps from internal docs (official docs coming soon)

Open the Settings menu → Updates → For Developers

Enable Developer Mode

Enable Device Portal

Open the Microsoft Store on device, look for “Holographic Remoting Player” Download and install

Run Remote connection

In UE project, make sure Windows Mixed Reality plug-in is enabled. (If not, enable and restart the editor when prompted)

Go to project settings → Platform → Windows Mixed Reality → Hololense Remote
Enter the IP address that appears on the device when running Remote Connection into this field
Device should now be connected and ready for streaming

Hope that helps!

Which settings menu are you referring to? The project settings? I’m not seeing an Updates tab.

I interpret that as settings menu on the Hololens

Oh I see. Yes, I’ve already been using the device portal and developer mode. I just thought you were referring to something else inside of Unreal.

Well I thought it was a firewall blocking it but, I still don’t seem to be able to connect to it. I can connect to the Device Portal but, for some reason I can’t connect in the Unreal editor.

Nothing seems to happen when I press the connect button with the correct IP. Neither the HoloLens nor Unreal seem to do anything.

I have the same situation - Hololens and UE4 is setup and running the remote app but the Connect button in UE4 seems to do nothing and no combination of obvious next steps help.

Let’s see what the official docs say!

I have the same situation. Hololens and UE4 is set up as required (Remoting app running) but the Connect button in UE4 does nothing apparent. We’ll have to wait for official docs I guess.

Yeah, Same problem here. I wish the Staffer would come back and answer this

I’ve let the XR QA Analyst know about this thread. (No device here, so I’m unable to troubleshoot)

I would also like to know this, please let us know when you have any updates.

Well, I tried sending in a bug report thinking I’d get some faster feedback but, I basically got a message back saying they weren’t going to provide any support for HoloLens until May. Hopefully, we would hear something back before then on here but, who knows.

Bump for visibility! I’ve tested lots of different things now, including with and without firewall. Nothing seems to happen when I connect to the HoloLens IP-address via the editor. Wireshark also does not seem to recognise any packages sent…

Especially with the HoloLens 2 coming up that’s supposed to work well with UE4, I hope to get some more docs on how this is supposed to work!

That’s a bummer – thanks for the effort and your comment though!

Hey, would it be possible to at least know if it is supposed to happen something visually when clicking connect button? As most of us has problems with nothing happening when clicking connect.

Since the latest preview, Holographic Remoting seems to work if you launch your app in VR Preview Play Mode – you might need to install the latest Windows Update though! The guide from is exactly what is necessary to make it run.

I thought I tried it with the last update, but I will try it again next week. But could you explain to me if there is a response when you click the connect button? or if it just updates in the HoloLens application when it works?

When pressing “connect”, the window disappears. As soon as you then start the application (in VRMode), you will see the contents on the HoloLens.

I got it to work, just as you said. Thank you.
Btw just a heads up. if you close the remote accesses app in the hololens while playing, unreal will crash.
