Light settings for Black Void Effect (possible?)

Hi,

I have been experimenting with creating this transition from a well lit room into this black void space. I created footage in C4D with Xparticles to create this black tendril thing that consume the walls/floor/ceiling (by making the footage into media player materials and attaching to planes), but I wanted advice/direction on controlling the lighting settings to have them change to support this black void. Is my main option to simply put the light objects in the sequencer, and have the intensity reduced? When I do try this, there seems to still be residual lighitng somehow? I have the autoadjusting light turned off. Is there a better way for me to set up the lighting to support this void effect?
