4.22 vs 4.21 performance issues on large projects

I have the perfect environment for troubleshooting my issues with 4.22. I have just purchased a new computer and have my old computer still hooked up next to it.

I have upgraded my project from 4.21 to 4.22 and tested it briefly. I then transferred the 4.22 project folder to my new computer and briefly tested it and determined everything was working.

However, I began to notice reoccurring issues:

  1. Saving levels, including auto saves, would freeze UE for about 30 seconds to a minute before being usable again.
  2. Moving large amounts of actors attached to a parent would freeze for a few seconds and then move, but not smoothly to the cursor location.

I first assumed this was a problem with the new computer, such as the 2080 ti or the i9 9900k processor so I began looking for drivers and on forums related to that.

However, I thought to see if I could reproduce this on my old machine and it surely happens exactly the same way using 4.22 on my old computer.

I then loaded up 4.21 on my old computer and the issues do not exist.

Conclusion is that 4.22 optimizations for better performance benefit smaller projects, but are a burden on larger projects when moving large amounts of actors, or saving a level.

I will be forced to use 4.21 until this is resolved.

I will transfer the 4.21 project to the new computer and use that and report back how it goes. I suspect it will run smoothly and if so, that is double confirmation of the issue with 4.22.

EDIT/UPDATE:

I have successfully transferred the 4.21 project to my new computer and it does not experience the problems in 4.22. This is double confirmation of the issues found in 4.22.

Note: Nothing was changed from 4.21 to 4.22 in the project.

If anyone knows of a resolution to this, I’d like to know.

Thanks

I have also experienced this to some degree. Upgraded to 4.22 and it seems that the engine constantly dips below 15 fps in intervals. It seems to be still trying to render everything even while behind other windows, which I don’t think it used to. Usually, entering another menu/blueprint menu would be more smooth, but it’s just as slow as the main viewport while this is happening. It seems to happen more when the engine is trying to load/unload large files into RAM, so maybe it’s something to do with the transfer process. Not really an answer, just confirmation that someone else has had this issue.

I have an advanced vehicle in my project where I add some static mesh to its blue print, it was working fine in previous versions, with this new version 4.22 the vehicle bounce randomly in the landscape and disappear completely once the game play, I tried to change some collision settings to the added static mesh , but the vehicle is still unstable somehow , any help is appreciated since I saw the same problem with some other users.

Same here. I hope the hotfix will be out soon…

In my case,I try saving my level after scult the terrain. The editor freeze at 30%. After 30min Iuse control_Alt_delete to close the engine! I think to revert back to 4.21!!!

Same issue here as well, especially when using a mobile previewer, freezes for 30s or more.

same here… even freezes during saves or opening asset library in the content browser sometimes…
This very rarely happened on 4.21!
Would be good to have a hofix for this because i cant convert my file back to 4.21 :frowning:

Same problem here, the editor randomly freeze and UE4Editor.exe uses one full processor. Sometimes it recovers after some minutes, sometimes i need to close the editor with the task manager.

Hi I summit a bug report yesterday about the save issue !

Also 4.22 Datasmith import takes ages!

Also 4.22 Datasmith import takes ages!

I’m also having difficulties using 4.22, I updated from 4.20 and the performance was acceptable with the same project, now the editor consumes all the available memory and drags the whole system. It’s unbearable to even achieve the simplest of tasks.
