Performance and other issues with foliage, alternatives or fixes?

I harvested the trees from the Landscape Mountains example project and I’m trying to use them in my own project but I’m getting big performance issues FPS going down from maybe 50 (before adding trees) to 15-20 (after) FPS, as well as weird shading (shadows not aligning with the trees as well as backside of trees being completely black). I tried building lighting but got a memory allocation error. That’s a question in it’s own, I only get that error when I try building lightning with foliage in my map.

I’ve read about people getting better performance and lightning results by placing trees either manually or with a blueprint, but I’ve never really understood why.

Basically my question is, am I missing something with the foliage tool that will increase the performance, or is the foliage tool itself so flawed that I should look at using other tools for placing trees and grass?
