I can't give my materials and textures names longer than 8 letters

Why?
I’m inside the Conten Browser,
all the assets from the starter content have long names, why can’t I create a material and give it a name longer than 8 letters.
It must be a Bug, UE4 tells me the maximum is 165 letters but it won’t let me use more than 8.
