Is it possible to scale resolution on different parts of the frame?

I was wondering if this was possible for VR devices. An example is that the center part of the frame would render at 100% resolution, and the edges would be 80%, with the far corners being 60%

Doing some research I found the Oculus foveated rendering that uses a checkerboard and reconstructs the pixels but that is much too complex for what I was trying to achieve.
