Does the Hardware and Usage Data collected by the Engine comply with COPPA Privacy laws?

I can’t give you legal advice on COPPA compliance, but I can say that the data you are referencing is anonymous (i.e., not personally identifiable information).

I’ll ask an engineer to respond to the turning data off question.

In Section 13 of the Unreal Engine 4 EULA it states:

  1. Hardware and Usage Data

You acknowledge that, as a default
setting, the Engine Code will collect
and send to Epic anonymous hardware
and usage data from end users of
Products. This functionality is used
by Epic to improve the Engine Code.
You may modify the Engine Code under
the License to turn off that
functionality in your Product, or you
may include in your Product the
capability for your end users to turn
off that functionality in the Product.

Is the data collected in compliance with the Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)? My studio is making a children’s game, and need to know if we need to turn off the data collection.

Thank you!

Thanks for the quick reply. We’re researching the issue ourselves as well. But thank you for confirming it does not contain personally identifiable information; that is a big help.

I had already posted in the Forums about how to disable the data reporting, and got a response. It can be found here:
