Recieved Crash When Renaming Blueprint Component

Hey Guys,

I just had a crash while editing one of my Blueprints. It was a Blueprint that had a bunch of TextRenderComponents and when I deleted a given one, replace it with a ChildActorComponent, and gave the ChildActorComponent the same name as the original TextRenderComponent, it crashed and gave me the following log… hope this helps

Note: If you see this TJ, after looking at the log, it seems to be related to Slate just like the previous bug. Different but maybe related to the fix that was taken care of in my previous post. If another team member sees this first, here is a the previous post I mentioned. Found another bug in 4.4.0, this one is odd, guessing its a Slate bug - UI - Unreal Engine Forums

Looks like it is happening again with the same series of events and I left two other steps from the previous comment. I also set the Location, Z: 100 for my item and clicked the Visible Checkbox. I’ll try it again and see which one it definitively crashes on.

I am going around this for the time being and doing a different set of steps with a lot of re-saving and I can get around it for now. I did get some more unrelated crashing so I think I am going to upgrade everything to 4.4.1 this weekend to see if some improvements happen to fix some of these issues. Thanks again guys.

I’m in the process of trying to pitch Microsoft my game for a publishing contract and my friend who runs Global Community Management at EA on the Battlefield series is trying to get me in EA and Sony as well. It’s been a long time dream to start my own video game company and I’m getting down to the wire to hopefully raise the funding.

Actually, when I left my job, the Friday before is when UE4 dropped and I’m not kidding that literally the night before, I was sitting there going over press info and videos on Inside Unreal wishing that it would come out and it did the next day. Since then I’ve been working from early till roughly 5am every night trying to get the content, functionality and idea of the prototype while also trying to learn as much about business and fund raising but it’s starting to come together. I’ve been chatting with Microsoft for a while through email and have been a member of the ID@Xbox program since last year but Friday is literally the first real opportunity to pitch them that’s not email so I just personally need a little bit of time to give it my best shot.

But thank you for the patience and I will definitely get to it by Monday one way or another TJ. Even though I found a way around it, I still have to convert a couple more of those TextRenderComponents to that new ChildActor I created so hopefully I can get it to happen. Okay TJ, sorry about the delay. I was able to make it happen once but I wasn’t recording yet. Every other time it actually threw an error in the compiler results. I am having a problem getting my video off my phone that shows me attempting to do that and for some reason, Windows isn’t seeing it. But basically what I did what have a TextRenderComponent with a name like ‘Options’ for example. In my case, it was attached to a SceneComponent. Compile it and once everything is good to go, try closing the editor, going back in, deleting ‘Options’, then adding a ChildActorComponent to that same root. Rename that as ‘Options’, then hit Compile and see if it crashes. It seems like maybe after it crashes, it then throws an error that TextRenderComponent ‘Options’ does not exist in the Compiler Results. Anyways, hope that helps and I’ll let you know if I see it again. Take care

I just attempted to reproduce this in 4.4.0 from Github, 4.4.1, and on another PC and I still can’t get your results. Perhaps recompiling the editor could fix it?

It’s possible. It did happen though in my 4.4.0 source before I upgraded it but it only seemed to crash once. I upgraded to 4.4.1 but you never know. It’s possible and what I’ll do is after the busy part of the day, I’ll go try this again and see if I can get it to happen. The only thing in my case that was different that I could remember is that it successfully was compiled already before doing those steps. I’ll try again today and see if I can find it. What I’ll also do is run the editor in the Debug Editor configuration and see if I can catch the line in the code that is throwing the exception and see what is conflicting. I had a serious face palm moment when I tried it and got the crash but wasn’t recording the video so I’ll see if I can catch it. I always hate elusive bugs like this because for as little as it’s crashing now, just trying to find the prerequisites can be a pain. But I’ll try to update you later today TJ and see if I can get it to happen.

I saw your other post as well, I’m glad your back in the project. I have asked one of our devs to look into that one too.

I don’t remember if you are using Source or not, but I just found out that one of our devs put up a fix for this on GitHub. If you merge this file into your version of the editor it should correct the issue.
