YOUR experience with UE4 on macs

Hey guys,

I’ve seen this question pop up a lot - but I don;t see any definitive answer to it.
I’m in the market for a used, as cheap as possible macbook for UE development for iOS. I have been happily using UE4 for 2 years now, it worked great on the rather beefy 2 computers I swapped over this timespan (currently a ryzen 2700x, 32GB @3200Mhz and a GTX970. No performance issues and it gets the job done.

I will continue to use my win desktop as my main development machine, but my previous experience was realeasing a very modest 2D game to the appstore. Most of the development was done on the PC, and for compiling the 100-something builds (until one of them was good enough both for me and Apple to accept) I used a…not saying hackintosh, but rather a…ok, it was a bloody hackintosh; And it wasn’t a good experience - while it worked, it’s certainly something I’m not willing to go through again - i probably spent more time on getting the Mac surogate to work than on the game. I even tried using the editor on the surrogate but it crashed every few minutes.

Anyway - 15 inch mac pros cost a fortune even used, they are rather bulky, the later models are unreliable (or so I heard), the older models…I’m not spending that much money on a laptop with some sandy bridge and a 1GB videocard unless the chassis is made out of gold and diamonds.

Now, considering I live and work in a country where most people still aspire at an 1000$ monthly wage and even a used 13-inch goes for 2000$ here - can anyone provide their experience with the editor in a 13-incher with Iris?

many thanks, guys, I know I can count on you! there’s gotta be some iOS devs around here…

I’m thinking editor FPS in various projects (like the 3rd person template vs something more complex), and how far would one need to dial the quality setting down

oh, and remote compile kind of sucks. I’d rather work on the macbook itself, And I don’t like imacs - they seem so fragile, and those mac minis are about as expensive as the laptops. Might aswell get a nice screen and usability in that price range

So…nobody? :frowning:

Still want to spend that hard earned moolah on a macbook for ios development…
