I want to become a video game programmer and desinger please help

Hi,

So I(15 years of age) want to become a programmer AND designer when I grow up and yes I know that there is a difference between them, I am currently actually practicing this by creating 3D games using Unity but I decided to try UE4 and I already have a lot of question please can someone answer them.

  1. What are royalties?

  2. Can I publish my game on Steam, Origin, Epic Games store or a website without me having to pay anything at all?

  3. Can I make an income from my game(s) without having to share some of it to the marketplace my game is downloaded from and do I need to pay Epic Games since UE4 is their property?

  4. Where can I publish my game without having to have a licensee or paying for anything?

Royalities are a slice of your profit that you would have to pay to epic and steam for using their software/platform. The benefit is that If you don't make money then you don't owe anything, but if your game is successful then it can be more expensive than subscription plans like unity uses.

Steam and the epic store will charge royalties. Idk about origin, check their website. Itch has a choose your own percentage thing so you don't necessarily have to pay royalties if you don't want to.

Godot is probably the best free 3d game engine and could be an option if you're planning to be your own boss, but unreal and unity have more features and are more popular in the development industry so if you want to get a job in this field they are better options.

1) Royalties are pay-offs every season(three months), you have to pay 5% if your game sells on more than 3000$.

2) Don't know about origin, but in steam you have to pay some fee, and royalties I said about before.

3) AFAIK no. You'll have to pay fee to marketplace and Epic Games.

4) AFAIK you can do it on free marketplace, like GameJolt. If you place it with price, you'll have to pay royalties.

It's also worth remembering that if you sell your game on the Epic Store, you no longer pay the 5% engine royalty.
