Animation Retargeting

So I’m a bit confused on how to use animation retargeting realistically. I understand that if you have the same skeleton you can trade around animations, and that’s great, but what about if I want to have characters with major differences?

For example, if I wanted to make an animation for a fighting game that is a “grab”, where two animations would have to interact, retargeting would be key. However what if I want to have an angel character that has wings? Would I need to have two skeletons for this character, one for the wings alone, and an identical “humanoid” one for all the characters?

Hi greynz,

You should not experience any issue in this case, because the wings are considered ‘leaf joints’, meaning that they are additions appended to the end of the skeletal rig (like a tail, ponytail, or holster). As long as you are not adding, removing, or significantly changing the other bones in the skeleton, you should not experience an issue with animation re-targeting.

Cheers
