No Version Information Received. How can i solve this frustrating problem?

I recently ran into this same problem of others, getting this same frustrating error when I try to login to UE4 launcher :

The solutions are vague and sometimes non-sensical, and yet I have tracked down each one and tried them. The last was to un-install UE4, and then re-install it. This added to my problems exponentially. At least before I could work off-line, but as I fall further behind in engine releases it’s not a good solution. Now, because of my fresh install, I have ZERO working engines, because an install doesn’t actually install the engine. So they were scrubbed from my system, and now I’m left with no working version of UE4. I’m incredibly frustrated.

Another user suggested a vague, restore your system to a previous time it was working. This is a vague and unacceptable answer to this problem. That would mean scrubbing all the software off my system, to possibly, maybe solve this problem. This is not an answer, this is a vague shot in the dark at great expense to me.

We need real solutions, real answers. Is this because of Windows 8.1? Is it because of something else within UE4? I wish people would stop closing this problem out like it is solved, when it is not. Is this because of the firewall?

Further if I hit OK, and then try to login anyway, it insists that I am not connected to the internet. Which I very clearly am… and I turned off my firewall completely to test whether this was a problem.

I have one week left to pull my work together, and I’m completely hosed thanks to this problem and the vague solutions.

i need help. please. help.

I am having this same issue. “Error! No version information received.” It started last thursday, Oct 16th. I’ve been running UE4 for several months now with no problems. Now I can’t get the launcher running either. I’ve been reading for days through the same stuff you have and trying different solutions, including uninstalling and reinstalling several times. I even tried a really old launcher installer I had from several months back and had the same issue.

I’m currently running Windows 7 ultimate x64, so Windows 8.1 may not necessarily be the issue. I am able to download the code from github and compile my own engine and that works. So now that is the only way I can access my projects since I tried the uninstall / reinstall thing and now I can’t log into use any launcher versions. I even has the launcher uninstalled, ran the engine from code and installed the launcher from inside the engine, as was mentioned in one of the other many closed, unsolved copies of this issue. I am still having the same exact issue after that.

I did the verbose logging thing. I dug through a bunch of the logs and did some comparisions and most of my logs are essentially the same, so here is a copy of the latest log from the launcher: Log file open, 10/19/14 04:48:33LogModuleManager:Warning: ModuleManager: Modul - Pastebin.com

edit: I should also mention I am not behind any firewalls or running through a proxy. I also haven’t tried updating any of my software in the time since the launcher last worked. It does seem like the UE4 launcher updated itself right before this started happening.

This just gets more frustrating. I keep searching posts, I try everything, and then I get all the way to the end of long posts about this SAME topic, and there is NO solution posted. Often, the comments have been locked. What is going on here? I cannot move forward.

I keep reading forum threads and answerhub threads but I am close to coming to the conclusion that I’ve tried every suggestion out there with no change in my issue.

Please help us epic.

i’m beyond frustrated with this issue. To make matters worse I thought it wise to run updates on my windows system, and this made things infinitely worse. Now I can barely use Explorer, and I can’t load things like dropbox, firefox, and various other things, including Unreal. I stayed up two nights in a row past 2:30am trying to fix this stuff. Last night I worked with Microsoft who went through a list of things with me from 12:30-3am, to alleviate the problems to no avail.

I feel like throwing this PC under a truck and driving back and forth over it. I’m in the process of transferring all my game work to my Mac computer. Something I would have done ages ago, except in the past UDK only worked with PCs.

At one point I had run parallels on my Mac to do game development but inevitably, the Windows environment corrupted my entire system and i had to rebuild from the ground up… vowing never to run windows on my precious Apple again.

I also feel frustrated about how to proceed with Epic regarding this issue. I feel that i’ve written about this everywhere i can until my face is turning blue, but no one seems interested in helping.

currently transferring my entire library to my Apple system, but I’ll be able to develop none of my UDK work from here on if I do in fact, toss this under a truck.

I hope that Epic doesn’t simply NOT close this problem…

and I tell you what… having debugged the hell out of my windows environment, I’m telling you. Never ever again, will I own a windows system.

I think I just found a working solution. According to this answerhub: "Error: Did not get a response. Are you connected to the internet?" - Getting Started - Unreal Engine Forums

Carlos responded with:
“We use the windows internet options for connections and we recently found out that some programs can disable certain TLS and SSL settings. Can you open up windows Internet Options (either through control panel or running msconfig.exe->Tools->Internet Options)? In the Advanced tab, scroll down the settings and make sure that “Use TLS 1.0”, “Use TLS 1.1”, “Use TLS 1.2”, “Use SSL 2.0”, “Use SSL 3.0” are enabled?”

I opened the Internet Options windows, opened the advanced tab and scrolled down to find TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 were all unchecked. I checked them and hit apply, now the launcher finally loads for me, no problems.

This seems to be getting me back on track. I have logged in from my windows system for the first time. I’m trying to download the engines now, but it seems to be taking a long time. I’ve already lost connection once, and had to restart to gain it back. So I’m not sure where this will lead, but I’m sticking with it, and will report back. Thanks Nuchaz for posting this.

this is a good start, but not quite working. I am trying to download the engine, but it won’t stay connected. it downloads 0mbs’ and eventually (20-30 minutes) gives up. If I try again, it gives me the same errors we are used to, so I restart, and try again to no avail so far.

i’m still testing this. I’ve had more luck. I was able to download Unreal 4.5 last night, which I haven’t been able to do for days. I did a couple other things to push the computer, but I’m not done trying to locate the problem.

1 ) I made the fix as suggested above. This got me to log in to Unreal but I couldn’t’ download.

2 ) I went into the msconfig file, and turned disabled all the things that were not microsoft. When i did this I noticed that Norton antivirus would not disable.

3 ) I re-installed Norton Antivirus and then disabled Norton.

Doing these three things seemed to allow me to log in and finish downloading. But I currently have all those things in msconfig disabled until I have time later today to turn on groups of them and narrow down what is interfering. If i find out what it is I’ll post it here.

Finally, none of these things fixed everything on my computer. I still cannot use Firefox, or Mozilla Thunderbird, or Google Chrome on this Windows 8.1 updated system…

one last note. even though I transferred my games to my Apple system and have it working through there, it feels less stable and takes longer to load on my newer HP laptop. I feel like i’m bound to the PC unfortunately for now.

Hi Finn,

Apologies for the delay in getting to this one. I can understand your frustration and we will start looking into this with you soon.

Can you upload a copy of your Verbose Logs for us as well. You can read information at the following link to get them: https://wiki.unrealengine.com/Troubleshooting_Launcher_Problems

Thank you!

Tim

Hi Tim,

I was able to login and download last night. I’m not saying it’s all working perfectly yet but I’m getting there. I listed some of the things I did above, and I suspect some of those things were part of the problem.

With my re-installation of some pieces of software things seem to be working cleaner. I suspect because there were parts of the original software trying to work in the background (Norton and Oculus said they were running even though I found they were no longer installed with my restore).

When I changed the TLS settings I was able to make contact with Unreal… but not cleanly or for long.

When I turned off all services in msconfig/services I was able to download Unreal 4.5.

When I looked at what was supposedly running i could see Oculus and Norton were not actually installed correctly anymore, but still had something running in services.

I reinstalled NORTON and was able to run more cleanly.

I reinstalled Oculus today and was able to cleanly access other software that had not been working, like Firefox, Thunderbird.

Also after re-installing NORTON, I found that i finally got notices that the firewall by Microsoft and NORTON were blocking access to Unreal, and the message asked me (once for each) if I wanted to allow access. I think messages like this were being stifled by some of the above problems.

Finally I restored to an earlier version of Windows 8.1 I believe in effect many of my problems started with the Windows 8.1 update, and got worse with the Windows 8.1 Update (yes not 8.2, but 8.1 “update”.)

This is where I am so far. I seem to be working, i’m trying to make progress on my game presentation, alas, now probably from lack of sleep I’ve gotten sick… so it goes.

fingers crossed that it keeps working, going to make a restore point tonight.

Note : when I say I turned off everything in msconfig/services I did not turn off the microsoft services (too afraid). By turning off I mean once I filtered out the microsoft, I “disabled all”

Since you’ve managed to resolve your issue this way I’ve gone ahead and marked this as the answer for now. I’m glad you’ve got it resolved at this point. If you are having trouble with this same issue again feel free to post here and I’ll take a look.

Thank you!
