Video card crashes after updates

Hi, I’ve used unreal engine since release in my laptop and it’s worked fine, ever since the update after 4.2.1 it crashes all the time giving me the video card has stopped working error… Has something changed with the updates? I’ve just tried the new 4.5.1 but still no luck getting a bit annoying now I’m paying for something I can’t use it might aswell cancel and stick using 4.2.1 version

Hey Scottc91-

You may want to check that you have the latest version of DirectX as well as the most recent drivers for your video card. Could you also post the DXDiag for your laptop?

Cheers

updated everything but still get a crash

I used a different laptop to try it out and this time I get these errors on editor launch showing these errors about the jit compiler and clrjit.dll error

Having no luck

The clrjit error on my.other laptop may get fixed when I update. Net framework. But on my main laptop it’s at any point the editor is open. Ithink launches from launcher and goes to the select project and once it loads it crashes. Open a previous project, it loads couple seconds later crash. Open a new project with first person shoot for example… Couple seconds after its loaded and crash. I haven’t tried opening a file directly from folder I’ll try that. I will get it for you when I’m home from work tomorrow, to double check how do I find the project logs to see where the crash is?

the log files are located inside the project folder in the Saved->Logs folder. The most recent is typically associated with the latest run of the engine so you may want to run the editor to generate the crash when you can. This will ensure that the log generated reflects the crash. You will need to run the editor again with 4.2.1 to get a separate log file.
Here’s a link that explains how to navigate to where the log files are saved: A new, community-hosted Unreal Engine Wiki - Announcements - Epic Developer Community Forums

Hey Scottc91-

Just for clarification, does the crash happen consistently or intermittently? Does it happen when opening the editor from the launcher or when choosing a project in the browser? Are you able to open a project directly from the project folder’s .uproject file?

Also, could you get a copy of the project log from the crash to help us see where the problem is occuring? A copy of the working log file from 4.2.1 will allow us to compare the two and hopefully see the difference.

Cheers

Understood I’ll post it tomorrow. Thanks

You mentioned it in your previous post, but you may also want to try uninstalling and reinstalling the latest .NET framework.

I’ll try that on both laptops, but I don’t know why .net framework would cause my video card to crash :\ I’ll give you an update tomorrow if I get any luck

My Project5 is version 4.5.1 i load it up soon as I try to click anything crash. I’ve launched both from project source, on both I tried to make a new level.

My Project 4 is version 4.2.1 which works fine, created the new level. I’ve had no issues with this version, I’ve been using this for my landscapes with world machine and inventory system etc and never had any crashes or even any lag. I know my laptop isn’t the best but it runs most things fine
I updated .net framework on this laptop no change

just realsied myproject4 ran from C:/ disc I migrated all the files to D drive, so I had more space. I Just deleted the remaining engine off C and ran my other project of 4.2.1 off my D drive and still works fine so it isn’t because of the drive :\

Hey Scottc91-

I just want to double check that you have updated the drivers for your video card. There is a known crash with a recent NVIDIA driver that a force update to the latest version should fix. According to NVIDIA’s website the most recent version for your card is version 340.52.

Cheers

I updated my.drivers before.I posted on here but.I will double check they are right when I’m home from work later and let you know. If they are updated any ideas what it could be?

I have updated my .net framework to 4.5.2 to be the latest result. My graphics card driver is 340.52 the latest version but still no luck.
Just to let you know, I have had this problem since any updated engine past 4.2.1. so 4.3 wouldn’t work and I didn’t try it again and thought the new 4.5 may have fixed it

Did you update your .NET framework or did you uninstall/reinstall? This issue is outside our scope and seems to be tied to your video card. If an uninstall and reinstall of the .NET framework does not solve the problem you may need to contact Microsoft support.

Cheers

I just.updated to version 4.5.1. I can try uninstall and reinstall. I don’t know what else it could be I’ve made 8k landscapes etc on 4.2.1 no issues. But try any later versions I get video card crash :expressionless: don’t understand how one version can work and the next crashes I’ve used every version up to 4.2.1 then 4.3 stopped working
From my dxdiag should my laptop technically be able to run it with all settings scaled down to low?

Even scaled to low, the video card for your laptop is well below the recommended hardware to reliably run the engine. Here is a quick explanation of the recommended specs: Linux Game Development in Unreal Engine | Unreal Engine 5.1 Documentation

I thought as much I’m surprised it works so well on 4.2.1. Has there been a graphics update from that patch which is just too much now? Guess I’ll just need upgrade at some point. Thanks for all the help anywah I’ll probably cancel my subscription till I get an upgrade
