LOD Rotation Bug

An LOD bug has existed for a while now that causes LODs to import with their y-axis rotated 90 degrees. See these previous posts for more detailed information on reproducing:

This bug has been around for a while and is becoming quite a headache for our artists so we are trying to fix the issue ourselves. We also don’t really have the option of switching to another program like 3DS Max (which might fix the issue) due to licensing and funding limitations.

Our question is: has anyone fixed this issue or is familiar with LOD importation that can help point us in the right direction? Right now we are looking through all of the StaticMesh*.cpp files hoping to find something, but these files tend to be thousands of lines long. Any info concerning where the problem originates would be extremely helpful.
