I’ve worked hard on this project. Now, whenever I access the “Details” tab of anything, the Editor AND the Launcher crashes, if it does not entirely freeze my computer forcing a manual reboot.
I can access the “details” of anything in the TTP template, in another new project. It only crashes when I do something in the project I’m working on. As far as I know, I changed nothing in my environment. As one point the Editor asked me to rebuild the blueprint references, which crashed, but I could still work on my project after that.
It works as long as I don’t interact with the “Details” of anything. I can drag new assets to the level, use the arrows to move them, but if I only pass my mouse over the details on something that would summon a tooltip, or click on a coordinate location or rotation, or click on the texture to change it, the editor freeze, then crashes, along with the launcher.
Anyone with idea so I don’t lose everything I’ve done so far?
Is there a way to manually tell the Editor to re-reference my blueprints (or whatever that was) to see if it could be that?
I could edit the details of a widget (my HUD). But still not when I want to change the position, or texture of an object (simple cylinder) in my level.
Although for me, it doesn’t seem to happen when I play with objects with reflective maps, but when I try to change a texture on anything. I just edited the location details of a blueprint without texture (no object, just a blueprint actor), but when I clicked on my new simple cylinder, and went to the details tab, everything crashed.
If anyone has a solution, even temporary, I’m adding on the 300+ users who have this bug.
Basically, it detects if your GPU is hung up and if it passes a certain amount of time Windows will automatically reset the GPU resulting in the crash. This is done to prevent a freeze forcing a hard reboot of the system.
Sometimes you need to add a little more time for your GPU to process before Windows causes the reset. To do this you need to change the TDR delay.
I have two suggestion on how to do this you can do it manually yourself OR you can download a tool that will do it for you. However, I haven’t used the tool that much myself but it does appear to work. (Use at your own risk)
NOPE! I set my TDR to 20 seconds (10, 12, 16 were not enough to get me working), and I wait 20 seconds when the editor seems loaded (give it time to finish addressing disk), before I do anything. Then, I play the level, forcing the editor to load a few things (that part works fine). I placed my Details tab on the far right of my second screen, so I can work via the other windows, without hovering above the Details window. (I can change stuff in the Details when there are no material selection, only variables and properties).
Then, I can work for around 10-15 minutes before a crash, if I don’t address anything that has to do with changing a texture; because the moment I click, or get close to the "Material "pull-down menu in the Details tab, now I just have to wait 20 seconds instead, before the D3D Hung crash. So far, I save often, and can’t work on the levels themselves, nor the meshes. I’m just building blueprints hoping a solution will happen, hoping I didn’t lose 1000$ of assets in the UE marketplace, and loads of hours of work.
My CPU is an Intel iCore7 X990, 6 cores (12 threads) at 3.47Ghz. 16gig of high-speed ram. Main disk is 500gig SSID disk for quick boot. Project is on my work disks: an array of 4 x 2TB disks (Total 8Terabyte) in Raid 1 for quick delivery. My graphic card is a Geforce GTX 570, which seems to be the root of the problem. Otherwise my machine is a monster.
Any other solution? I’m willing to work with you guys and try stuff.
Okay, thank you for the feedback. We are still investigating this issue. I will update this post once more information is found.
[EDIT] A user (IronicParadox) suggested that going into the content browser pane > click the little eye that says “View Options” and uncheck “Real-Time Thumbnails.” made the engine much more stable.
I have exactly the same issue with 4.15.1 and the “Unchecking the Real-Time Thumbnails resolved also my issue(4.15)” resolved my issue also.
Hope to get this fixed in the new released of the engine.
