I didn’t see a forum thread for user Experience. The closest is this one:
http://forums.epicgames.com/threads/968404-Who-does-Epic-envision-Rocket-being-used-by
I think it would be helpful to have a Sticky thread for high-level feedback like UI\UX. If tyhere is on ealready, can you let me know and I’ll poste my feedback there ?
By the way, I am an absolute, dedicated, Unreal Engine die-hard. I’ll use no other Engine
Here’s my feedback so far:
Less Cluttered, more FLOW-based UI
-
The current Rocket UI would be better as a typical two-screen workflow. I’m not only referencing UE3 or UDK, but other engines as well. (But I think UE3 did it best). The current default UI configuration is actually more like what I would expect from an animation editor (minus the tracks, etc…)
-
The current Rocket UI does not support FLOW-based development. It’s hard to “get-in-the-groove” and take off like a pro. Some programs offer feature accessibility in ways that support FLOW-based workflows. Here, I am referencing UE3 (specifically), but we can also look at other software from other markets, such as: Microsoft Word, Excel, Photoshop, Mudbox, 3ds max, JIRA. <<< In their respective fields, users here can really put the headphones on and take off, soaring.
-
Also, there are many missing features in the current Rocket Editor. I don’t want to explicitly call out UE3\UDK as a top 10 inclusion so I’ll only hint at it here. Maybe a separate forum thread for “What Features form UE3\UDK Do You Miss Most” ?

There are a lot of paradigm shifts happening simultaneously in Rocket, so one’s “Editor muscle-memory” may be going one way, but Rocket’s going another. Added to this is the idea that this needs to be deployed across teams of varying sizes

I want a more fun UX Blueprint Experience ! An example, fun Blueprint workflow is a layout that feel more like MotionBuilder, with a “Go To Blueprint” Tab for the Blueprint schematic view.
-
This describes a viewport that
I am able to work in, supports
drag-n-drop, adding actors, tinkering with settings, to build archetypes,
while your current level is open. -
By having something like this, we have
a nice, sterile 3d viewpoint (Like a whitebox environment)
to build in and a “Go To
Blueprint” button that harvests and
compiles resources into the
node-based graph view.- Pushing the “Go To BluePrint” button in this Window View harvests the archetype components you just built in the MotionBuilder-style tool and it contains all the flow-based node modules.
There’s also no tag I can find for UX in the Popular Tags section below. maybe adding one would help, too?
